No way, no how, no bailout.

I’m calling my congresswomen and telling them I do not support this bail out. I’m a registered Democrat, but I think this is the rare issue that truly crosses the party line. There are many reasons I oppose the bailout, and I’ll hit them one-by-one.

1) It rewards the bad actors who got us into the mess in the first place.
First, the people who bought houses that they knew they could not afford. Second, the lenders who made these bad loans without caring about the likelihood that they could not be repaid. Third, the insurers who bribed the government to not call credit default swaps (CDS’s or mortgage insurance) insurance, thus relieving them of the obligation to keep cash on hand in case they had to pay the off the insurance policy.

2) The government will undoubtedly overpay for this debt.
The problem is two-fold right now: these loans are worth somewhere between .30 and

"Syracuse is playing extremely well," FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher said. "They come on a two-game winning streak. They've given up three points total in their last two games. They're playing extremely well. They're tough to defend on, to deal with on defense, different blitz packages, different fronts, come at all different angles. On offense they're very physical, can run the ball, [they have] two excellent backs [and] an athletic quarterback."

It's hard to say which is more stressful, midterms or finals. I would say midterms. It's true that finals week is dense, but at least you get them over with and have no worries afterwards. Midterms will seemingly drag on forever and sometimes professors decide to switch dates on you, which they can't do with finals. For finals week, you know it's time to buckle down and get serious because this is your last shot and you have an exam every day. Then there's a nice, long, assignment-free break to look forward to.

UK Cops Arrest 19 After Offering Them Free Beer

abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2011/11/uk-cops-arrest-19-…

How do you crack a cold case? Try a cold case.

Nineteen Britons wanted on various crimes were arrested after being offered free beer by police in an undercover operation, according to Derbyshire (U.K.) Constabulary.
Dozens of suspects – for crimes including robbery and sexual assault — got letters from a marketing firm inviting them to call the company in exchange for a free case of beer, police said.

The calls were put through to officers at Chesterfield Police Station, who arranged a time to deliver the beer at the caller's home, police said. At the appointed time and place, the caller was arrested.

"These suspects are people who have managed to evade arrest for some time, so we have used different tactics to find them," said Chief Inspector Graham McLaughlin. "It has been very cost-effective, as it can take a lot of time and money to track people down."

The operation was part of Operation Rocky, which targets "serious acquisitive crime across north Derbyshire," a police statement said.

It's the most horrible time of the year. When your heads are all swelling and everyone's telling you, "I need a beer."

Now that the calendar is inching toward mid-February, midterms are slowly returning with a vengeance. After a nice honeymoon period where we could just sit back, let our professors ramble on, and then go home and sleep, we have to hit the books—and hit them hard. Suddenly, the lists of events on "Fridays at the Union" posters are smaller and the lines of cars around campus are longer. Little by little, class sizes are more closely resembling the high numbers they were given on Blackboard.

Midterms are an invisible elephant in the room; there's no designated week for them like finals, but at the same time, we all know when they're here. We know when trying to find an outlet at Strozier is like looking for a needle in a haystack, and when the frisbee throwers on Landis are suddenly replaced with blankets and books. We know when the one place on campus that isn't full of people is the gym. For the past two weeks, the Leach went from being constantly packed to slightly less than the usual crowd. Walkinf around campus, you can hear students buzzing about upcoming exams.

Whereas with midterms, you might have one or two, and then it's three weeks before you have another one, and it's easy to fall back into the old habits of procrastination and laziness that have been plaguing you all semester. Then when the week of your next exam finally rolls around, your other professors decide to make that their quiz and paper week. No wonder class sizes are occasionally cut in half afterwards.

It'll be interesting to see how the crowds on campus will change over the next couple of weeks. On the one hand, they may rise and drop from one day to the next, or they might remain constant until spring break (which I'm sure we're already dying for). It's difficult to pinpoint exactly when the craziness of the season will end, it really depends on course load and how generous professors are feeling. I've had tests range from multiple-choice take-home to inhumanely difficult short answer with time constraints that clearly lacked any sign of compassion.

The best advice I can offer is to keep your eyes on Spring Break—and hope you don't get any tests upon your return.

Remember when we mentioned November was an extremely hard month to own? Well now you know. Stanford answered Florida State's prayers when they knocked off Oregon and now the top two teams in the nation are clear.

However, the season's far from over. Florida State still has four games to remain perfect in to ensure a trip to Pasadena. Coming to Tallahassee next is a 5-4 Syracuse team on homecoming weekend, who will most likely be the last team FSU faces with a winning record this regular season. Like they've done in weeks past, it's time for the No. 2 'Noles to roll up their sleeves and get down to business.

Syracuse is coming off what is likely their two biggest wins of the season with defense the name of the game in their last two wins against Wake Forest and Maryland. In those last 120 minutes of football, 'Cuse has only allowed three points to opponents.

Against Maryland, the Orange picked off C.J. Brown twice and made him fumble on four different occasions, securing two of them. The week before, Syracuse held Wake Forest to only 25 rushing yards in a 13-0 win. It almost looks like they're taking a page out of the Seminoles playbook with the aggressive, in-your-face defense so it's important to come out fast and not allow 'Cuse to gain momentum with their active D corps.

Aside from shutting teams down over the last couple weeks, 'Cuse has been running the ball extremely well. Their two backs, Jerome Smith and Prince-Tyson Gulley, have been great so far. The two have combined for 16 total touchdowns and been pretty hard to stop for opposing teams. However, the Seminoles' specialty has been shutting down their opponents' running game. Aside from the BC game when Andre Williams, who already has a NCAA-leading 1,471 yards, walked all over the FSU D-line, every back FSU has faced has been contained.

Something special happening this weekend in Tallahassee, aside from the homecoming concerts and events, is the 1993 national championship team reunion.

It's been 20 years since Bobby Bowden and Charlie Ward brought home the Seminoles' first national title and the entire team will be recognized during the pre-game ceremonies.

No. 2 ranked teams, nationally televised games, Heisman candidates playing and massive pre-game ceremonies celebrating the 20th anniversary of their first national title? Basically just another game day in Tallahassee.

No. 2 Florida State takes on Syracuse at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, and the game will be televised on ABC.

.80 on the dollar, and no one wants to buy them at any price. So now the government will come in and rescue these irresponsible lenders. Guarantee you that the feds pay 50% more than anyone else would be willing to pay for this debt.

3) It doesn’t solve the root problem.
Are they going to require oversight of CDS’s? Will we start regulation & oversight of the shadow banking system? If not, this problem will just repeat itself in 5 or 10 or 20 years.

4) We’re rushing into a solution
Good solutions aren’t developed over a weekend or two weeks. Whatever band-aid bail out they come up with will be loaded with unintended consequences and will lead to hundreds of billions in extra spending beyond what anyone anticipates. You can take that to the bank.

5) Scare tactics are being used by the administration to coerce congress into giving the president massive new powers
I’m sorry, but didn’t we just leave that party?

6) Once the government owns the debt, borrowers will be much less likely to pay if off.
Think about it– all these problem borrowers are from the people who overpaid for their houses and borrowed more than they could ever afford. And the government has been going on for over a year about how we can’t kick people out of "their" homes and onto the street. Now, all of a sudden these people are going to be stiffing the government & we’ll own the houses. Any bets on whether we ever evict ANYBODY? This is a giant signal to the borrowers that they can STOP paying their mortgages immediately, because the government is coming to rescue them. The solution will probably be to write off the debt 100% and give the houses to the current occupants.
