"All these groups that have sprouted up around the country have diffused the attention to breast cancer," said Fran Visco, president of the National Breast Cancer Coalition and former chair of the Integration Panel of the Department of Defense Peer-Review Breast Cancer Research Program.

"They take up dollars and put them into little pots all across the country. They take away from the efforts that can—and do—make a difference.

— They should all be focused on putting themselves out of business."

My first marriage ended in divorce because my wife thought that I had cheated on her…and I did, and I’ll tell you why. When you enter into a monogamous relationship with someone you agree to not have sex with anyone else, ever—for-fuckin’-ever—but…when that person decides they’re not going to have sex altogether, you find yourself in quite a pickle.

I hadn’t been laid in six months.

I can’t go six months without having sex.

I’ll go have sex with someone else.

I know, I’ve seen me do it.

So, it’s after a show in Columbus, Ohio, and this woman comes up to me and asks if I’d like to come up to her room and have a drink, and I said I’d better not because I’m married. And she says, "Well, I didn’t ask if you wanted to have sex, big boy, just if you wanted to have a drink." Well…okay.

You know that little guy on your shoulder that stops you and reminds you of your moral fortitude when you’re about to do something wrong?

I’d didn’t hear a peep outta that guy, he ain’t been laid in six months, either.

He’s like, "Suck her titties!" I’m like, "I was gonna!" Afterwards, though, he he was back on his stoop. "That was wrong, mister!" Shut up, 20 minutes ago, you were beating off on my shoulder, monkey boy!

I don’t like him.

He smokes pot.

He burned a hole in my other jacket.

National Breast Cancer Awareness month serves to honor and recognize the struggle women have faced battling breast cancer.

Like so many others, I am no stranger to the impacts breast cancer has on family and friends. My aunt and grandmother battled breast cancer, so this is an issue very dear to my heart. I have participated in the Susan G. Komen 5k Race, bought pink wristbands and proudly wore the pink ribbon every year. I will never forget the rush of emotion I felt when the survivors walked past me in the opening ceremony before the race.

As each survivor proudly walked by me, I saw hope in their eyes and strength with each step they took. With this picture engraved in my mind, it saddens me to see how companies have exploited this disease in order to make a profit.

We are told a percentage of every purchase is donated, but we are left in the dark when the actual numbers are broken down. This booming pink industry all started in 1992 when Estée Lauder counters distributed pink ribbons to promote breast cancer awareness.

Now, there are thousands of charities, foundations and brands abusing this cause to make a comfortable living for themselves. We have been wrongly convinced our pink purchases actually make a difference in the fight to end cancer.

"Breast cancer remains the leading cancer killer among women ages 20 to 59," reported Marie Claire writer, Lea Goldman. "More than 1.4 million new cases are diagnosed annually worldwide."

Goldman uncovered several charities that falsely collect donations for breast cancer purposes across the United States. I was appalled by the numbers and reports of charities that collected innocent people's money for their personal bank accounts.

They should all be focused on putting themselves out of business."

To decide where best to contribute, ask the right questions. Always ask where your money is actually going. It is never good to assume your money is going towards a "good cause." You want to make sure the product you purchase contributes to the cause. For example, Susan G. Komen Foundation partnered with KFC calling the campaign "Buckets for the Cure."

Legitimate organizations include: Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, The University of Texas, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and The Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center.

This month should not be about purchasing the most stylish pink products. We should focus on making a difference for those fighting to overcome this obstacle in their lives. We should encourage women to get checked, educate women about breast cancer or volunteer our time at local cancer centers. Wearing a pink T-shirt won't change the numbers of women diagnosed with breast cancer, but catching it in its early stages could.

It's that time of year again. Athletes wear pink on their uniforms, students don bracelets with "I heart boobies" printed on them and the FSView & Florida Flambeau prints a pink issue of the newspaper dedicated to breast cancer awareness. This is all done for the right reasons–October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

But even as we all set aside a month to support research efforts, to celebrate survivors and to remember those who lost their battle with breast cancer, it's important to remember that the fight is ongoing, and after this month the disease nor those affected will disappear.

That's not to say that we're not on the right track. Last year alone the National Cancer Institute reported that nearly 3 million was spent on breast cancer research, a number that trumps the amounts spent on any other cancer research, survival rates have shown a marked increase since 1989 and awareness has skyrocketed, after all, there's an entire month dedicated to increasing understanding and awareness of the disease, its warning signs and its impact.

Still, breast cancer is a disease that affects one in eight women and one in 1,000 men. It's a disease that, with the exception of lung cancer, kills more people in the U.S. than any other type of cancer. This year, 232,340 women and 2,240 men are expected to be diagnosed with the disease, according to the non-profit organization Breastcancer.org. And in the same year, nearly 40,000 women are expected to lose their fight with breast cancer.

As positive as the actual meaning behind this month is, there's always the looming possibility of what could essentially be considered commercializing a disease. "I heart boobies" bracelets, pink ribbons and T-shirts are great for spreading a message, as long as that message is taken as meaningful and important rather than as an accessory, as many commercialized causes too often are.

After all, we live in a culture that worships commercial success and mainstream trends. And while that culture works wonders for communication and awareness, it can also blur the line between meaningful action and blind support. For example, Invisible Children's Kony 2012 campaign received mainstream recognition last year, but seemed to gain more momentum as a pop culture movement, than it did as a call to political action. Subjecting breast cancer awareness campaigns to the same ephemeral attention would be nothing short of an injustice.

The point of breast cancer awareness campaigns isn't to just stop at awareness and call it quits as if a mission has been accomplished, but rather to turn that awareness into real and serious action in hopes of improving the situation. Buying a bracelet is great, but don't forget what it means.

As this month goes on, keep in mind that breast cancer awareness and research go far beyond October. This is a fast-paced society that in its effort to spread information and action can sometimes dehumanize and commercialize an important cause. Remember, "out of sight, out of mind" doesn't fix anything. So even when the month is over, don't forget, don't lose interest and don't stop fighting.
