Fortunately, my move-in mistakes are a nice base to build my future successes on. Ideally, that future success will start in the next week when I move in to an apartment for the first time. As I do, I'll be trying to keep in mind how I can avoid my past mistakes, as well as to keep an eye out for new mistakes-in-waiting.

As far as valuable skills go, being good at the move-in process isn't exactly one of mine. Pick a fault: forgetting stuff while packing; packing stuff I don't need; destroying my hands by carrying way too much on one trip. Whatever way you slice it, changing living arrangements has not been kind to me.

Apartments, for example, usually require that residents pay utilities for their units. In other words, no more taking 45-minute-long showers or falling asleep with a Mythbusters marathon playing on Netflix unless I want to literally pay the price. I probably shouldn't do either of those in a residence hall, what with the whole environmentally friendly thing being the right idea, but the fact of the matter is that I paid the same amount for housing whether I was taking five or 50 minute showers.

So it's thoughts like that which run through my mind in the week leading up to living in my first apartment. I'm afraid to even think of the food situation, since my excitement at the chance to have total control over what food is available to me is dampened by the realization that I am incredibly lazy. After a summer spent at home, scrounging leftovers from the refrigerator more often than actually cooking for myself, that laziness is on prominent display.

These are the thoughts of a college senior living in an apartment for the first time, and they obviously differ from that of an incoming freshman. I was so naïve as a freshman that I was actually excited when I walked into Smith Hall and saw my room. As any current or past resident of Smith knows, it is definitely not something to get excited about. But that was just my freshmen year mentality at work.

That year, and the next, I had an unlimited meal plan. Such joy I felt when I thought about how I could waltz down to Fresh Foods or Suwannee and eat my fill any time. At least, any time while they were open. I thought I had it made: Financial aid would pay off all my housing and meal plan bills, and I had an unlimited meal plan with an open mind to go with it. My biggest worry at the time was probably about making friends.

I ended up making friends by playing Frisbee on the same exact day I moved in, and though I'm not friends with those people anymore, the story shows just how trivial my concerns ended up being. Looking back, I realize that every time a new 'biggest problem ever faced' comes along, it is really only the biggest problem I have faced so far. Whether that makes me sob into my pillow or smile serenely depends on the day, but it certainly helps me keep some perspective on my move-in woes. That is, at least until the next crisis comes along.

Thank you! I love Sheryl’s music. She’s been one of my favorite singers since I was a kid. This is what I call easy-listening.
