Highs and lows of using Flickr

paulgalbraith.com/blog/highs-lows-using-flickr

It's time Flickr put all of its users first, they should introduce a system that's unable to delete an account instantly, instead accounts that Flickr consider have broken their terms of service would be made private. The user could then be informed of the reasons and given time to make the necessary changes, and when completed could apply for review to have the privacy restriction lifted. This would also protect accounts from accidental deletion.

I don't want to sound too negative, Flickr can be a great site for most of the people that use it, myself included. There just needs to be a few changes to safeguard the time and effort many of us put into our Flickr accounts.

Last issue I wrote an article titled "Conversations with the boys you hate," an open-ended piece about general male expectations when they enter a nightclub and, more specifically, why they might not call the girls of "last night" today.

What I learned from the experience was that many men, not all, might treat girls as physical objects because that's how they perceive women (especially in nightclub settings) to be presenting themselves.

Since then, I've spoken to girls from all over the college party spectrum, learning about what influences the revealing nightclub outfits discussed last week and how they feel about the male perspective on the clothing. The following answers reflect those opinions.

"There's a lot of competition to be the hottest girl at the club," says a BFA junior. "We want boys to want us, so if wearing nothing solicits that reaction, so be it. Some girls just want to have fun."

Others disagree

"I think everyone has the right to wear whatever they want," said Lauren Bouchacourt, another interviewee.

"With saying this, I think the way girls dress now definitely draws attention for all the wrong reasons. The reason someone should be attracted to you is for your genuine self and personality, not how much hangs out in all the wrong places. These clothes send the message that these women are not ready to be in a serious relationship with guys and guys take advantage of that."

From here, I decided to gather other opinions. The next girl I spoke to, Alison Carr, shared her point of view.

"When a guy doesn't have to use his imagination to 'undress you with his eyes,' then there is a problem," said Carr. "If a girl doesn't have enough respect for herself to cover up more of her body, how can she expect a guy to have any respect for her at all? And when a guy doesn't respect a girl, it follows that he should see nothing wrong with disrespecting her and treating her like an object. This is why guys [as stated in the prior article] wouldn't have a problem with taking a girl home and never talking to her again."

My next interviewee took a more philosophical approach.

"[College girls] have a youthful beauty that is temporarily so, yes, you can still be beautiful till death, but this type of beauty the college girl holds now is fleeting, and she knows it," she said. "How a girl dresses for the night announces how in touch they are with their beauty, sexuality and personal expression—not to mention, budget. Every woman is different, some are demure, some are vibrant, some are strange—all hold a unique sense of identity, how confident a woman is in that identity [physically and/or mentally] is how 'sexy' society believes a woman to be.

Some women respect their bodies by keeping them covered until it's time for the bedroom or the shower, some women reveal their bodies during sport, dance or everyday life as a message of security about the way they look. How you express your sexuality and your body is your decision, a decision made with equally respectable choices."

As they did last time, these conflicting opinions bring up more questions than they answer. For my last interviewee, I return to my original question from the last article: "Why do you think guys often neglect to call girls back that they meet at a nightclub or house party?" Her answer sums it up completely.

"In the club setting, more often than not, people are dressing and acting to attract, seduce and, depending on the desires of the person, secure someone for the night," she said. "When you are banded, and you walk through the door of a club, you are entering a game. We are all playing, and if you don't agree, you've probably been the prey longer than you'd like to admit."
