It was Good Friday. We were cruising the Kerala backwaters on our house boat when the skipper asked us if we’d like a little walk.

We said we would, grabbed cameras and we moored at the bottom of someone’s garden.

Having clambered off, we were led through several gardens and a couple of houses. Everyone was friendly and we had to shake hands with all the people we met.

Eventually, after buying some toothpaste, we came to a large church and were directed round to the back.

As we turned the corner we were confronted by a noisy group of children in national dress and wearing heavy make-up. The colours were amazing.

Once they saw the cameras, the noise level increased considerably and it was clear that we were not going to get away until we’d photographed everyone of them. Even the parents wanted in on the act and we spent a very happy half-hour laughing and joking with them even though the children only spoke very limited English.

One little girl seemed to find her way into every shot, usually at the front. Obviously a natural model!

Our guides explained that for the Christian children it was a tradition that they dressed up like this for a Good Friday service at the village church. By good fortune we happened to be passing at exactly the right time.
